THE TEAM

Luc Birraux
Artistic Director
Luc Birraux is a stage director, dramaturg and librettist. Holding a Master of Arts in saxophone from the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in dramaturgy (University of Lausanne / La Manufacture), he joined the Académie of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence as a stage director in 2015.

From 2016 to 2023, he worked as a dramaturg and assistant director on the major European opera stages: the Opéra Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra National de Paris, the Opéra-Comique, the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Teatro Real de Madrid, the Royal Danish Opera, and the Matsumoto Festival in Japan. Since 2023, he has been leading acting workshops for the Jeune Ensemble of the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
Alongside this collaborative work, he has developed his own productions. In 2019, he rediscovered the lost manuscripts of the chamber opera L'Ombra by Ugo Bottacchiari and directed its world premiere at the Théâtre Le Reflet in Vevey, Switzerland. The following year, he created an adaptation of Georges Perec's novel La Disparition for prepared piano, percussion, voice and electronics. The premiere was held in Lausanne, followed by performances at the Festival des Athénéennes in Geneva, the Festival des Jardins Musicaux, and the Opéra de Dijon. In 2021, he directed a semi-staged production of Robert le Diable at the Opéra de Bordeaux, then wrote and directed La Traviata Barrée at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. That same year, he received the Prix de la Fondation Leenaards, which enabled him to undertake a research journey through the Middle East (Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia) tracing the various versions of the legend of the Holy Grail. In 2024, he completed the libretto for Graals, a lyric mystery in three acts for baroque orchestra and electronics. The world premiere took place at the Théâtre du Jorat, followed by a revival at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Cité Bleue in 2025. In 2026, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Opéra de Chambre de Genève.
